Two-Day Charity Bicycle Festival for Women Supports Blackwater Refuge

Wild Goose Bicycle EventThe Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge will benefit from the proceeds generated by The Wild Goose Chase, a large two-day charity festival just for women cyclists to be held near Cambridge on Maryland’s Eastern Shore on Saturday and Sunday, October 13th & 14th, 2012.

Participants will have a selection of bicycle rides to choose from, and the terrain is flat and rural with most cycling in and around the Blackwater Refuge.  In addition, other activities such as kayaking and ranger-led scenic tours will be available.  Dinner on Saturday evening will be hosted by Georgena Terry, the well-known founder of Terry Bicycles, a main sponsor of the event.  In its fifth year, the annual Wild Goose Chase was originally started by Georgena Terry as a one-day event, but it has now expanded to two days and hundreds of riders.  Along with Terry Bicycles, the other major event sponsor is Gore Bike Wear, a bicycle clothing manufacturer.

On Saturday, participants can choose from a variety of self-guided bike rides, optional kayaking trips, or a scenic ride through the Blackwater Refuge itself, guided by an ecologist/ranger.  On Sunday, the main cycling event will take place, and riders will be able to select from four routes ranging from 16 up to nearly 70 miles.  Support vehicles will be available to provide mechanical assistance, and each route will feature rest stops with ample food and portable toilets.

Prizes and awards will be given out during the two days, and Terry bicycles will have many bike models available for test rides. Gore and Terry will also have a tent sale on both days during the event with substantial discounts on high quality bicycle clothing and bicycle accessories.

Marin Bicycles for Women

I found another bicycle manufacturer that makes Women specific models – Marin Bikes.

Here’s their story:

Marin Bikes was established in 1986 in San Anselmo, California and celebrates its 24th anniversary this year. Its offices lie in the shadow of Mt. Tamalpais, commonly referred to as the birthplace of mountain biking and still at the heart of the sport.  On advice from his doctor, founder Robert Buckley rode a mountain bike to help heal a nagging knee injury and quickly became passionate about the sport.  He founded Marin Mountain Bikes upon this passion and remains dedicated to the pursuit of the ultimate cycling experience.  After 24 years Buckley remains at the helm of Marin, directing daily operations and is the creative drive behind the brand.  According to Buckley, ‘After more than 20 years of business, we haven’t lost sight of our core values.  I am committed to building a bicycle that is light-weight, durable and designed to give riders the highest quality ride for years to come.  I’m proud of what this company has become.’

Since its founding, Marin has built its strong reputation upon a number of technological advancements including:

  • Lightweight Hardtail Mountain Bikes, utilizing state of the art titanium, carbon, aluminum and steel materials combined with cutting edge frame technology
  • Quad-Link Full Suspension Mountain Bikes, a proprietary technology enabling the most effective and reactive suspension system available today
  • Performance Oriented Flat Bar Road Bikes meld the comfortable style of a mountain bike with the light weight aerodynamics of a road bike
  • City and Urban Bikes, clearly leading the industry and setting the standards for performance and design

Marin Mountain Bikes first established its reputation with high performance mountain bikes.  Today, the company offers a comprehensive line of nearly 90 bikes for all skill levels and preferences, in the Mountain Biking, Road Cycling, City, and Juvenile categories.

Marin’s employees continue to ride the same trails and experience the same emotions that gave birth to the sport of mountain biking when it first began. Marin’s products include bikes, bike accessories and clothing, and are distributed by independent bicycle dealerships throughout the United States and 46 other countries.

Marin Bikes offers a wide selection of bicycles that are designed to meet the needs of female cyclists including:  Mountain HT, Road, Street and Path.  You can check out all their women specific bicycles here:
